I’ve been noticing an interesting trend lately: best selling books that include the F word in the title.
You definitely won’t find these in the children’s section of your local bookstore, but you will find these often at the front of the store on the best seller rack – but why?
There are loads of examples, too:
👉The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson
👉Unf*ckology by Amy Alkon
👉Unf*ck Yourself by Gary John Bishop
👉F*ck Feelings by Michael and Sarah Bennett
👉F You Very Much by Danny Wallace
Each of these books have amazing content that is potentially life changing for many readers, but how important do you think using the F word in the title is to their overall success?
Here’s the truth: the content of whatever you produce can be amazing, but unless you capture people’s attention in the first place, it’s not going to matter
But, there’s a line, and several publications like Buzzfeed have been known for crossing that line just to get a click and a view, which isn’t good. Is that what these authors are doing? By using titles like these they are potentially going to push some people away even before the first page is read.
I’m excited to open up this discussion and would love your opinion on this. Perhaps this is trivial and doesn’t matter to you at all, or maybe you consciously made a decision NOT to read these books because of the title. I’m curious, and would love your opinion in the comment section below.
