Don’t trust the best buy salesman — he doesn’t edit video.
Basic Components to Consider When building a computer:
1. Ram (Get a lot) and make sure your software can use (sometimes your hardware can actually be better than your software.
2. Get a good Video Card NVIDIA Quadro FXhttp://www.nvidia.com/page/quadrofx_family.html
3. Hard Drive — Used Raid Set Ups (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID)
a. Keep the Raw Video & and the working files on different Hard drives
b. If you can have your OS on a Solid State Hard Drive … that is optimal
c. Back up you data… Raids, Externals
d. Bottom line is Video files are big so you will need and use a lot do space
4. Use Duel Monitors (consider the color matching of those monitors)
5. Consider the Cost of the software. Video, Audio, Converters.
a. I use NEO HD to convert AVCHD files from my Canon Vixia http://www.cineform.com/neohd/
6. Good Speakers or Studio Monitors
7. Mother Board — consider if you want to expand it later
8. Get a dock for usb ports and such! Save yourself from the back pain.
